AI interview prep: how to prepare for an AI interview by role

Preparing for an AI interview starts with identifying the format, then mapping your real experience to the job and rehearsing answers an automated interviewer can follow. This guide collects the general method and every role-specific walkthrough.

As of September 2026

"AI interview" is an imprecise label, and preparation starts by pinning it down. A live virtual interview has a person asking follow-ups. An on-demand video interview records fixed answers for later human or algorithmic review. A conversational AI interview responds to what you say and may probe. Each needs a different rehearsal, so the first job is to read the invitation as a specification: live, one-way or conversational; number and type of questions; preparation and response timers; attempts allowed; camera, microphone, browser and identity checks; whether notes or tools are permitted; and whom to contact if the platform fails.

The second job is an evidence map rather than a script. Structured interviews measure behavioural and situational competencies against predetermined standards, whether a human or a system delivers the questions. Turn each requirement in the job description into one substantiated example with the situation, your own action, the result and a lesson, keeping dates, team sizes and metrics accurate. An evidence map survives differently worded questions; a memorised script does not.

Then practise the answer loop an automated interviewer can follow: state the answer in the first sentence, give the evidence and the action you personally took, name the result and how you know it, and add a reflection. Rehearse a thirty-second direct answer, a ninety-second evidence-backed answer and one deeper follow-up. Run the platform's practice question as an equipment test on the same device, browser and network you will use, request any accessibility accommodation before pressing start, and decide a failure protocol in advance.

The role-specific guides apply that method to the questions a given role actually gets. A data engineer rehearses pipeline, modelling and recovery decisions without inventing schemas or incidents; a site reliability engineer rehearses incident narratives and capacity trade-offs; a product manager rehearses prioritisation and metric definition; a sales candidate rehearses discovery and objection handling; an engineering manager rehearses delivery, hiring and performance conversations. Each guide is built around the same rule: use AI before the interview to generate practice questions, find gaps in the evidence map and critique a rehearsal transcript, then verify every claim and answer the real assessment yourself.

The shortcuts that make evidence less credible are the same everywhere: running a live answer generator, reading a script, optimising for rumoured keywords. They introduce experience you do not have, answers that do not survive a follow-up, and a rules violation if the employer prohibits outside tools. Unless the instructions expressly allow assistance, treat the interview as a closed evaluation of your own judgment.
