What CodeSignal Proctoring Records and Who Reviews It

A proctored CodeSignal assessment records your camera, your microphone, and your screen for the entire session, takes a photo of your face and a photo of your government ID before the timer starts, and sends the recording to a human review team rather than to the employer. As of September 9, 2026, CodeSignal documents that the review takes one to three business days, that the recording is deleted within 15 days, and that the company requesting your result receives only the score and Coding Report. Automated integrity checks, which CodeSignal calls Suspicion Score, run separately on what you typed. This article lays out both layers and links to a dedicated answer for each common question.

Two systems, not one

CodeSignal integrity has a human layer and an automated layer, and they look at different evidence.

Proctoring is the human layer. CodeSignal's proctoring documentation says: "Prior to the assessment, you will be prompted to share your camera, microphone, and screen for the duration of the assessment. You will also be prompted to show your government-issued photo ID to validate your identity. This data will be recorded and following the completion of your evaluation, it will be reviewed by the CodeSignal proctoring verification team."

Suspicion Score is the automated layer. The Suspicion Score documentation says CodeSignal flags "potentially suspicious activity from a variety of sources and synthesize those data points to assign a trust level for each question submission." It runs on editor data: paste events, description copies, code similarity, language switches, and replay timing.

Not every CodeSignal test uses proctoring. The documentation states: "You will see whether or not proctoring is required in your Assessments section before you take the assessment." How to tell whether your CodeSignal test is proctored covers the tells.

What the proctoring recording contains

The verification team checks three things, in CodeSignal's words: "Your camera, microphone and screenshare were shared for the duration of your evaluation," "Your ID is valid (government-issued and not-expired) and contains your full name and photo," and "You observed all evaluation rules that were displayed within the evaluation instructions prior to your session."

On retention: "Identification and proctoring data is reviewed by CodeSignal only and is stored and deleted within 15 days. It will not be shared with the company who requested your coding report." The employer "will simply receive a copy of your assessment result and score."

The rules you agree to

The last two setup steps are "Check your surroundings" and "Acknowledgements." CodeSignal's GCA rules article shows the checkboxes. The surroundings step asks you to confirm "I will complete the evaluation in one session without breaks and without leaving my workstation," "I am alone in the room," and "I am connected to a power source." The acknowledgements in CodeSignal's screenshot include "I will not consult or copy content from any external source, such as a website, book, or other person," "I will not use external generative AI tools," "I will not use other devices, including phones or tablets," "I will not use scratch paper," and "I will not search the web; doing so will result in disqualification."

The same article's Q&A carves out one exception for the GCA: syntax-only searches are permitted, and it adds that "the use of AI is not allowed, including syntax search." Which rule set applies to your session is the one shown on your screen, and it is repeated in the IDE's Rules tab during the test.

What gets a result rejected

CodeSignal's recruiter guide to proctored invitations lists the common rejection reasons: "Test-taker was not alone in the room during the assessment," "Test-taker got up from their seat during the assessment and exited the camera's view," "Test-taker used other devices during the assessment," "Test-taker used an external IDE," and "Test-taker searched online for help (other than syntax-related searches)."

A rejected session shows the recruiter "Proctoring Rejected" with a reason on hover. CodeSignal also notes that "Proctoring has no impact on the score you receive"; the score is computed automatically, and proctoring decides only whether it is certified. What CodeSignal does not document

CodeSignal's public documentation, as fetched on September 9, 2026, does not describe eye tracking, gaze analysis, a snapshot interval, automatic tab-switch detection, AI classification of screenshots, or multiple-monitor detection for assessments. A single-monitor requirement appears only as an optional interview pledge. The review model is a recording watched by people. CodeSignal Interview is configured separately

Live interviews have their own controls. CodeSignal's interview setup documentation lists IP monitoring, a "Disable description copy" option, a pledge to close all tabs and apps with sub-pledges for a syntax tab, a single monitor, and CodeSignal-IDE-only use, and, on eligible plans, full proctoring that prompts for video, audio, screen, and ID. What this means for candidates

Read the Assessments page before you start; it says whether proctoring is on. If it is, plan for a continuous recording of your camera, microphone, and screen, sit alone, keep phones out of reach, and stay in frame. Ask the requesting company in writing about anything the acknowledgements leave unclear. If the rules prohibit AI or outside help, prepare with those tools beforehand and take the test without them.
