Does CodeSignal Use Your Camera? Webcam and ID Rules

Yes, on any proctored CodeSignal assessment. The webcam records for the full session, and setup takes a still photo of your face and a photo of your government ID. As of September 9, 2026, CodeSignal documents that the footage is reviewed by its own verification team, is not sent to the employer, and is deleted within 15 days. CodeSignal does not document eye tracking or gaze analysis; the review is a person watching the recording for the behaviors the rules prohibit. A non-proctored CodeSignal test never asks for the camera.

What the camera captures

CodeSignal's proctoring documentation describes three camera uses:

• A continuous recording. "Prior to the assessment, you will be prompted to share your camera, microphone, and screen for the duration of the assessment."
• A face photo at setup. "When you make it to Step 6: Take Photo, you will be prompted to take a picture of your face."
• An ID photo at setup. "For the next Step 7: Take Photo ID, you will be prompted to take a picture of your official ID." Upload is allowed if the camera shot is unclear. "We require a clear photo, your full name and the expiration date to be visible on the submitted ID. If preferred, you may redact all remaining information on the ID card."

Candidates without a government ID "may reach out to our support team to request a special accommodation and provide alternative photo ID." If your name and photo are on opposite sides of the card, a second photo can be added.

The recording is a video, not periodic snapshots. CodeSignal documents no capture interval.

What the reviewer checks

The verification team confirms "Your camera, microphone and screenshare were shared for the duration of your evaluation" and that the ID "is valid (government-issued and not-expired) and contains your full name and photo." Then it checks the rules. The camera-relevant rejection reasons in CodeSignal's recruiter guide are "Test-taker was not alone in the room during the assessment," "Test-taker got up from their seat during the assessment and exited the camera's view," and "Test-taker used other devices during the assessment."

Those map to the "Check your surroundings" boxes you tick at setup: "I am alone in the room" and "I will complete the evaluation in one session without breaks and without leaving my workstation." Leaving the frame is a documented rejection reason on its own.

Does CodeSignal track your eyes?

Not according to anything CodeSignal publishes. The documentation fetched on September 9, 2026 describes human review of a recording and does not mention gaze, eye movement, head pose, or any webcam model. That is a real difference from HackerRank, which documents a gaze-analysis feature; the comparison is in whether coding assessments track eye movement. On CodeSignal, looking away is not a signal by itself. A second person in frame, an empty chair, or a phone in hand is.

Who sees the footage and for how long

"Identification and proctoring data is reviewed by CodeSignal only and is stored and deleted within 15 days. It will not be shared with the company who requested your coding report." The employer receives the score, the Coding Report, and an editor replay, none of which include video. CodeSignal adds that it "does not sell or otherwise disclose Personal Information we collect or process in our proctoring services." External cameras and phones as webcams

CodeSignal's third-party device article says: "CodeSignal has webcam and microphone access through the browser, so any application is recognizable by the browser will work with CodeSignal." A phone used as a webcam through such an app is a camera, not a second device in the sense of the rules, but the phone then cannot be in your hands or on your desk as a screen.

CodeSignal Interview

Live interview proctoring adds two options the assessment flow does not mention. CodeSignal's interview setup documentation lets the employer "Specify whether their face must be visible and well-lit throughout the session" and "Specify whether headphones or sunglasses are permitted." If your interview link has proctoring on, expect both to be enforced.

What this means for candidates

If setup asks for the camera, you are on a proctored test: stay in frame, alone, with no phone in reach, until you click submit. Check lighting before the ID step, because a rejected ID photo stalls setup rather than the timer. If setup does not ask, the camera stays off.
