What Does HackerRank Proctoring Detect and Record?

HackerRank can record or flag different activity depending on the integrity mode selected by the employer. As of August 9, 2026, documented controls include full-screen enforcement, tab-switch events, copy-and-paste restrictions or tracking, single-monitor checks, periodic screenshots, screen sharing, webcam analysis, code similarity, and session replay. Not every HackerRank test uses every control.

HackerRank has multiple integrity modes

HackerRank’s Test Integrity documentation distinguishes several modes. Secure Mode uses a controlled browser experience, while Proctor Mode adds AI-assisted review. HackerRank also documents a Desktop App Mode with operating-system-level monitoring.

Because employers configure tests, two candidates using HackerRank may encounter different permissions and restrictions. A normal coding test may not request a webcam. A Proctor Mode assessment can require webcam access, full-screen operation, one monitor, and screen sharing before the timer starts.

What can Secure Mode detect?

HackerRank documents Secure Mode as enforcing full screen, preventing multiple monitors, restricting copy and paste, and alerting on browser-tab changes. Some reports also expose copied text or timeline events to reviewers.

A tab-switch or full-screen-exit event is a signal, not proof of misconduct. Recruiters interpret the report in the context of the test rules and other evidence. If a notification, accessibility tool, or technical problem causes an event, document what happened and contact the test administrator.

What does Proctor Mode add?

HackerRank’s April 22, 2026 Proctor Mode documentation says the mode can add:

• webcam monitoring for candidate presence, multiple faces, and certain objects;
• entire-screen sharing and periodic screenshots;
• automated screenshot analysis for unauthorized resources or tools;
• a replay combining browser activity, screenshots, webcam images, and integrity events;
• code-similarity and editor-activity signals.

The documentation states that screenshots are normally captured every 15 seconds and can increase to every five seconds around an integrity event. It also says webcam images may be captured every five seconds when the test includes candidate personal information. Those frequencies are product documentation as of the date above and may change.

HackerRank says screenshot analysis can look for tutorial or answer-sharing pages, external AI coding tools, collaboration or remote-desktop software, browser extensions, overlays, and screen-recording tools. Do not infer that hiding a window makes a tool permitted. Test rules govern use, and the platform can combine several kinds of evidence.

What should a candidate expect before the test?

Before a monitored test, you may be asked to use Chrome or Edge, disconnect additional monitors, grant screen and webcam permissions, enter full-screen mode, and acknowledge prohibited actions. The onboarding screen should disclose the required access.

Prepare with this checklist:

1. Ask the recruiter which resources, documentation, and AI tools are allowed.
2. Use the practice test and supported browser on the same computer.
3. Close private documents, messages, password managers, and unrelated applications.
4. Silence notifications and disconnect extra displays if instructed.
5. Check camera framing, lighting, network stability, and power.
6. Save the recruiter or support contact in case setup fails.

Can HackerRank detect everything on a computer?

A browser-based test does not automatically receive unrestricted access to every file or process. Its visibility depends on browser permissions, the selected sharing surface, platform features, and whether a desktop application is required. However, Proctor Mode can require the entire screen and analyze screenshots, while Desktop App Mode is documented as adding operating-system-level monitoring.

The safest practical assumption is simple: activity visible on a shared screen, captured by the webcam, recorded in the editor, or represented by browser events may appear in the report. Do not rely on a supposed technical blind spot to override the assessment rules.

Review the consent screen, ask for clarification before the timer begins, and prepare a clean, stable environment.
