HackerRank proctoring: what it detects and records

HackerRank records different things depending on the integrity mode the employer chose. This guide maps Secure Mode, Proctor Mode and Desktop App Mode to what each captures, and answers every HackerRank question Control has documented.

As of September 2026

HackerRank can record or flag different activity depending on the integrity mode the employer selected, and two candidates on the same platform can meet very different permissions. A plain coding test may ask for nothing beyond a browser. Secure Mode enforces full screen, prevents multiple monitors, restricts or tracks copy and paste, and alerts on browser-tab changes. Proctor Mode adds webcam monitoring for presence, multiple faces and certain objects, entire-screen sharing with periodic screenshots, automated screenshot analysis, and a replay that stitches browser activity, screenshots, webcam images and integrity events together. Desktop App Mode moves the test into an application with operating-system-level monitoring.

The documented numbers matter. Screenshots are normally captured every fifteen seconds and can rise to every five seconds around an integrity event; webcam images may be captured every five seconds when the test includes personal information. Screenshot analysis is described as looking for tutorial or answer-sharing pages, external AI coding tools, collaboration or remote-desktop software, browser extensions, overlays and screen-recording tools. Hiding a window does not make a tool permitted; the rules on the consent screen govern use, and the platform combines several kinds of evidence.

Not everything is a verdict. A tab-switch or full-screen-exit event is a signal that a recruiter reads in context; a notification, an accessibility tool or a connection problem produces the same event as a deliberate exit, so document what happened and contact the administrator when a technical issue causes one. Code similarity and editor-activity signals sit alongside the behavioral events.

A browser-based test does not get unrestricted access to your machine. Visibility depends on browser permissions, the sharing surface you chose, the platform features enabled, and whether a desktop application is required. The safe assumption is that anything visible on a shared screen, captured by the webcam, typed in the editor or represented by a browser event can appear in the report.

The posts below answer the individual questions: whether a test is proctored, whether HackerRank records your screen or audio, how it uses the camera by mode, whether it detects cheating, ChatGPT, copy-paste, keystrokes, other tabs or multiple monitors, what the desktop app requires, what a proctored test looks like step by step, and where an AI assistant is and is not appropriate. Facts are current as of September 2026.

There is no single answer to what HackerRank records because employers choose the settings. Read the consent screen, ask for clarification before the timer begins, close unrelated applications, and if AI is prohibited, use it to practise beforehand and complete the live test without it.
