HackerRank Chakra: What the AI Interviewer Records

Chakra is HackerRank's autonomous AI interviewer, and it runs inside a desktop app that locks your machine. Here is what it captures and scores.

Chakra is HackerRank's AI interviewer. HackerRank's documentation describes it as an "AI-powered interviewer that conducts fully autonomous interviews for technical and non-technical roles" — no human on the other end, questions that adapt in real time, and a standardized rubric applied across every candidate. If you have been sent a Chakra link, you are not scheduling a call with anyone.

The part that matters most, and that most candidates discover only when they click the link, is that Chakra can require the HackerRank Desktop App. That application is not a browser tab. It takes system-level permissions, runs the session in enforced full-screen, and by HackerRank's own description "detects and closes other programs you try to open, including AI assistant tools." This article covers what Chakra is, what the desktop app requires, what gets recorded, and what all of that means in practice. All details are from HackerRank's own documentation as of September 2026.

What Chakra actually is

HackerRank positions Chakra as a pre-screen: an interview that replaces the recruiter or engineer who would otherwise run your first conversation. Its documented characteristics:

  • It is autonomous rather than live. There is no human participant, though a human reviews the output afterward.
  • It "adapts questions in real time" rather than reading from a fixed list.
  • It includes an in-line code editor where, per HackerRank, "candidates can write, edit, and run code while continuing to interact with Chakra for guidance."
  • For coding questions, "Chakra follows up with questions about their approach and reasoning, helping evaluate problem-solving skills."
  • It scores against "a predefined, standardized rubric" that "applies the same scoring criteria to all candidates," and it "generates detailed candidate reports."

Two implications follow from that design. First, the follow-up questioning means a correct solution alone is not the deliverable — Chakra is built to probe reasoning, so a working answer you cannot explain scores poorly. Second, because the rubric is fixed and applied uniformly, this is closer to a structured assessment than a conversation, and the usual interpersonal levers do not apply.

HackerRank's July 2026 release notes add that Chakra now displays statuses such as "Listening" and "Thinking" during the interview, and that a "Plan Mode" "allows candidates to create and refine an implementation plan before writing code." If you see Plan Mode, use it — an explicit plan is exactly the reasoning artifact the rubric is looking for.

The desktop app, and what it does to your machine

HackerRank's candidate documentation for attempting Chakra through the Desktop App is unusually explicit, and it is worth reading closely before you agree to anything.

Permissions you must grant. Webcam, microphone, screen recording, and — on macOS — accessibility and full disk access. On Windows, camera access. These are not incidental; screen recording and accessibility permissions are what allow the app to observe and control what runs on your system.

What it restricts. The app "blocks unauthorized activities such as accessing other applications, browsers, or tabs" and "prevents you from leaving full-screen mode or switching to another application." It "launches your interview in full-screen mode. You can exit full-screen mode only after you complete the interview."

What it actively does. This is the sentence that matters most: the app "detects and closes other programs you try to open, including AI assistant tools." That is not passive flagging. It is enforcement.

Environment requirements. Windows 10 or 11, or macOS Monterey 12 and above on Intel or Apple Silicon. A working webcam and microphone. A single monitor. A quiet, private, well-lit space. Device plugged in or fully charged. All other applications closed before you start.

What happens when conditions break. "Any attempt" to leave full-screen or switch applications "is recorded." If a new monitor or screen mirroring is detected mid-interview, "you must disconnect it to continue." The July 2026 release notes describe this as Chakra detecting when a candidate "connects an additional monitor, shares their screen, or exits full-screen," and pausing the interview until conditions are restored.

What gets recorded and flagged

Chakra ships with what HackerRank calls "built-in integrity and proctoring safeguards" that monitor "candidate behavior during the interview" and flag "suspicious activity for review." Where Proctor Mode is enabled on HackerRank assessments more broadly, its documented behavior gives a good picture of the underlying stack:

  • Webcam frames captured every five seconds, with warnings if your face is not visible or if more than one face appears.
  • Screenshots every fifteen seconds, increasing to five-second intervals around suspicious activity, analyzed for "unauthorized tools, collaboration platforms, and external AI assistants."
  • Object detection that "detects and flags mobile phones and tablets in the candidate's webcam feed, including when devices are only partially visible."
  • Gaze detection, in limited availability, identifying "repeated patterns of looking away from the screen and returning to type."
  • Continuous monitor verification, flagging new connections during a session.
  • Tab and full-screen exit attempts, automatically flagged and logged.

Reviewers receive an integrity result of "High" or "Medium", a summary, and a session replay: a timeline-based view with synchronized webcam images, screenshots, event listings, and highlighted activity. Note the direction of travel. Object detection now catches partially visible phones. Screenshot analysis explicitly targets "newer AI tools." Gaze detection is new. Each July 2026 release note in this area describes a tightening rather than a loosening.

Where this leaves an interview assistant

Control is a desktop AI interview assistant for Windows and macOS. It runs as a native overlay with real-time transcription, screenshot analysis, and hotkey-driven responses, and it documents that the overlay stays out of screen captures and does not interfere with a shared screen. That behavior concerns screen sharing — what a meeting client transmits to a viewer.

A Chakra interview delivered through the HackerRank Desktop App is a different problem entirely, and the honest answer is that it is not a fit. The app takes screen-recording and accessibility permissions on your own operating system, enforces full-screen, and by HackerRank's own documentation detects and closes AI assistant tools it finds running. It is not observing a shared video stream; it is inspecting the machine. On top of that, the webcam-side features — object detection for phones, multi-face detection, gaze detection — watch the room rather than the computer, so a phone-remote workflow is specifically what phone object detection exists to catch.

We are not going to tell you there is a configuration that defeats this, because we do not believe there is one, and any vendor promising otherwise is selling a claim it cannot support. Where Control fits is the large remaining category of interviews that are not lockdown-proctored: ordinary video calls, screen-share technical discussions, and open-book formats where assistance is permitted. Preparing for a Chakra interview

  • Do a dry run of the environment the day before. Install the desktop app, grant permissions, and confirm your webcam and microphone work. Permission prompts on macOS often require a restart of the application, which you do not want to discover at the start time.
  • Physically disconnect the second monitor. Do not rely on disabling it in software.
  • Narrate your reasoning out loud and in the editor. Chakra follows up on approach and reasoning; silence gives the rubric nothing to score.
  • Use Plan Mode if offered, and write the plan before the code.
  • Fix your room, not just your machine. Single face in frame, no phone on the desk, decent lighting, door closed.
  • Request accommodations in advance if a disability affects gaze patterns, speech, or your use of assistive software. Gaze detection and multi-face detection are pattern matchers with no knowledge of your circumstances, and an accommodation agreed beforehand is far easier than contesting a flag afterward.

What you can push back on

An AI pre-screen is not always non-negotiable. Some employers will substitute a human conversation if asked, particularly where an accommodation is involved or where you are a referred or senior candidate. The request is more likely to land if it is specific and early rather than a general objection after you have been invited. Be realistic about the tradeoff. For a competitive role in a large funnel, declining the pre-screen usually ends the process. That may still be the right call for you, but make it deliberately.
