Is CodeSignal Proctored? How to Tell Before You Start

Some CodeSignal assessments are proctored and some are not, and CodeSignal tells you which before you begin. As of September 9, 2026, its documentation states: "Some CodeSignal assessments include remote proctoring and an identity verification step in order to ensure the validity of your results. You will see whether or not proctoring is required in your Assessments section before you take the assessment." When proctoring is on, the setup flow asks for your camera, microphone, screen, a face photo, and a government ID. When it is off, none of those prompts appear, but CodeSignal's automated Suspicion Score still runs on what you type.

The three CodeSignal formats and what each does

Certified assessments. The General Coding Assessment (GCA) and the other certified assessments are the ones most often proctored. CodeSignal's GCA rules article says: "In order to have your score certified by the CodeSignal team, it is important to abide by the rules presented to you before you begin." Certification is the human proctoring review, and a certified score is one that can be shared across companies.

Company custom assessments. An employer can build its own assessment with or without proctoring. The invitation and the Assessments page state which. Either way, the employer gets the editor replay and Suspicion Score.

CodeSignal Interview. Live interviews use a pledge by default and can add proctoring. CodeSignal's interview setup documentation describes "A pledge to close all tabs and apps aside from the interview session" with optional sub-pledges, and separately "Enable Proctoring which will override the pledge." It also notes: "Customers on our Build or Grow plan do not have access to proctoring for live interviews."

Signs your test is proctored

The setup screen is the reliable indicator, because a browser cannot open your camera, microphone, or screen without a prompt.

• Camera and microphone check at step two means recording is in scope.
• Share Screen at step four means your display is recorded for the duration.
• Take Photo and Take Photo ID mean identity verification. CodeSignal's proctoring documentation says: "We require a clear photo, your full name and the expiration date to be visible on the submitted ID. If preferred, you may redact all remaining information on the ID card."
• Check your surroundings and Acknowledgements are the rule screens. These can appear on non-proctored tests too, so on their own they do not confirm recording.

What still runs when proctoring is off

Two things. First, the employer sees a replay of your coding session with "suspicious paste events" marked, per CodeSignal's results documentation. Second, the Suspicion Score synthesizes paste size and timing, description copies, similarity to other submissions, and language switches into a per-question rating from "None" to "High." Practice assessments are not proctored

The GCA rules article offers a Practice button before setup, and the test-taking guide describes sample questions you can try first. Those run without the proctoring flow. The closest rehearsal of a proctored session is the real setup sequence, which happens before the timer: CodeSignal states that "The timer for your assessment does not begin until you complete all the setup steps." Proctored versus non-proctored attempts

A non-proctored score does not substitute for a proctored one. CodeSignal's cooldown documentation states: "If all of your previous attempts were non-proctored and you receive an invitation to complete a proctored assessment, you will need to complete the assessment again in the proctored format, regardless of when you last submitted."

What this means for candidates

Check the Assessments page and the invitation. If proctoring is on, expect a continuous recording of camera, microphone, and screen, reviewed by CodeSignal staff and deleted within 15 days; the inventory is in what CodeSignal proctoring records. If it is off, your typing is still replayable and scored for integrity. Either way, the acknowledgements on screen are the rules for your session.
