Not by default. Codility documents proctoring as a per-test option that employers switch on before sending invitations, and as of September 9, 2026 its documentation states that "Proctoring is disabled by default." What is always on is different: a similarity check against other submissions, a network check, and, for most task types, a post-submission typing-pattern analysis. None of those watch you during the test. The intro page you reach from the invitation link is where the employer's choices become visible, and Codility lets you read it without starting the timer.
What runs on every Codility Screen test
Codility Screen is the asynchronous assessment product, formerly called CodeCheck. Three checks apply to it whether or not proctoring is enabled.
Similarity Check compares your submission with "every other submission we've received—over 12 million assessments" and with leaked solutions scraped from the web, per the Similarity Check documentation. It runs only on candidates who reach the passing score, or 40% if no passing score is set.
Network IP Detection checks "if the candidate is going through the assessment from the same device or location," according to the fraud detection overview. The same page says a flag "is not a guarantee that the candidate has cheated," using a home-to-mobile network switch as its own example.
Typing Pattern Detection analyzes keystroke sequences after you submit. Codility's Typing Pattern Detection documentation says it "is on by default but can be turned off per assessment" and that "The candidate is entirely unaware that this signal is being collected."
These are post-hoc checks on the submission. They involve no camera, no screen, and no live monitoring.
What proctoring adds when the employer enables it
Codility's Proctoring documentation describes the layers an employer can add, individually or together.

Because the settings lock at invitation time, the documentation states that "Proctoring can only be enabled for tests that have not had candidates invited yet." The test you were sent will not gain proctoring after the fact.
How to tell which layers your test uses
The intro page is the authority. Codility's candidate FAQ confirms you can open the invitation link "to read introductory information, assessment policies from your testing team, and see how many problems" without starting, and that "Unless you press the 'Start' button, you can leave and come back."
Read that page for four tells:
- A tracking disclosure. When proctoring is on, the documentation says candidates "will see a disclosure on the session's intro page, indicating that the hiring team has enabled event tracking and informing them of the specific behaviors that will be visible to recruiters." No disclosure means no behavioral proctoring.
- A camera setup step. The camera FAQ says that when snapshots or video are enabled, "You won't be able to start the test until you go through the process of initial setup for the camera."
- Allow prompts for screen or microphone. The proctoring page says "candidates must select 'Allow' in order to proceed with the assessment if these features are enabled," and that for screen recording "they can choose between sharing a tab, a window, or entire screen."
- An app download page. If the link asks you to install the Codility App, Device Integrity is on. Its documentation states candidates "cannot complete it in a standard browser."
A browser cannot open your camera, microphone, or screen without a prompt, so the absence of a prompt is reliable for the browser layers.
Codility Interview is monitored differently
Codility Interview, formerly CodeLive, is the live session product. Its live proctoring signals notify the interviewer in real time about "switching browser tabs, losing browser focus, attempting to copy the task description, and copying external code," and the documentation states those "signals are not visible to candidates." Recording is separate: an interviewer can start a video recording only after confirming "that all participants have consented."
What this means for candidates
Open the link early, read the policies, and note which prompts appear before the timer. A plain start button means the employer relies on the post-submission checks; a camera gate or a screen-share prompt means live capture. Codility's own candidate rule is short: "you must work on your own," and whether books or websites are allowed is set by "the assessment policies included in your test link."
