CodeSignal Cooldown and Retake Rules for the GCA

CodeSignal limits how often you can retake a certified assessment through a cooldown period, and the General Coding Assessment falls in the strictest tier CodeSignal documents: at most three attempts in a rolling 180 days, with at most two of them inside any 30 days. As of September 9, 2026, the documentation also says you get one attempt per invitation, that during a cooldown you can share a past score instead, and that the requesting company sees your highest score. A retake is not a reset; the older attempts stay on your record until they age out of the window.

The three cooldown tiers

CodeSignal's cooldown documentation defines a cooldown as "a period of time when you have to wait after taking a CodeSignal assessment before you are eligible to retake that assessment," and says it "varies depending on the certified assessment." The tiers:

• "Limit of 1 assessment attempt within a 180 window"
• "Limit of 2 assessment attempts within a 180 days window"
• "Limit of 3 assessment attempts in a 180 day window, with at most 2 attempts in 30 days"

The GCA example in the article uses the third tier. CodeSignal does not publish which tier each other certified assessment uses, so check the cooldown notice on your own Assessments page.

How the rolling window works

CodeSignal's worked example:

The window is rolling from each attempt, not a calendar reset. In CodeSignal's words: "if you took the General Coding Assessment three months ago and then two more times in the last month, the General Coding Assessment would be in a cooldown period until 180 days have passed since the first assessment attempt."

One attempt per invitation

You cannot retry inside the same request. "Please note that you cannot make multiple attempts per invitation; you can only reattempt upon receiving a new request for results (when not in the cooldown period)." A new company invitation is what unlocks a new attempt, and only if you are outside the cooldown.

If you are inside it, "you can share a past score for that type of certified assessment with any companies that request an assessment result." The recruiter guide gives the deadline: the test-taker "takes the assessment OR chooses to share an existing score for the verified assessment within 14 days of receiving the invitation."

Which score the company sees

The highest. CodeSignal's results documentation tells recruiters: "The test-taker's highest score will be shown here, even if it is not the most recent score." A lower retake does not overwrite a higher earlier result.

There is no fixed expiry on a score in CodeSignal's documentation. Instead, each company sets its own limit: "If your previous scores are older than the hiring company's configured threshold for acceptable score age limits, you will be granted a new attempt." So a score that one company accepts may be too old for another, and the second company's request unlocks a fresh attempt regardless of cooldown.

Exceptions that grant a new attempt

CodeSignal lists three cases where a new attempt is granted "regardless of cooldown period":

• "Incomplete assessment attempts involving technical issues or other extenuating circumstances identified by the CodeSignal team do not count against any assessment attempt limits."
• "If all of your previous attempts were non-proctored and you receive an invitation to complete a proctored assessment, you will need to complete the assessment again in the proctored format, regardless of when you last submitted."
• Scores older than the company's age threshold, as above.

For a technical failure, CodeSignal's retake FAQ directs you to [email protected]. For a bad day with no technical issue, it directs you to the company: "please reach out to your requesting company to see if they can accommodate this."

The alternate-account rule

"It is not permitted for the same person to use a different account in an effort to bypass a cooldown period." A proctored attempt includes a government ID photo, so a second account is matched to the same person. What the ID step captures is in when CodeSignal uses your webcam.

What this means for candidates

Treat the first GCA attempt as the one that counts. Two attempts a week apart lock you out for the rest of the month, and a third locks you out for roughly five months.
