The Ophthalmic Imager performs specialized diagnostic imaging examinations utilizing ophthalmic imaging equipment to locate, evaluate, and document critical functional, pathological, and anatomical data. This position supports Ophthalmologists in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of eye disorders by producing high-quality diagnostic images, maintaining imaging systems and records, and providing imaging support in clinical, surgical, and research settings. A Brief Overview
The Ophthalmic Imager performs specialized diagnostic imaging examinations utilizing ophthalmic imaging equipment to locate, evaluate, and document critical functional, pathological, and anatomical data. This position supports Ophthalmologists in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of eye disorders by producing high-quality diagnostic images, maintaining imaging systems and records, and providing imaging support in clinical, surgical, and research settings. What you will do

• Performs ophthalmic diagnostic imaging procedures to obtain high-quality images for physician interpretation and diagnosis.
• Photographs medical phenomena of the eye to document diseases, surgical procedures, treatments, injuries, and congenital abnormalities.
• Performs Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) examinations and ensures diagnostic quality and accuracy.
• Obtains diagnostic color fundus photography and fundus autofluorescence images. Assists with fluorescein angiography procedures in accordance with departmental policies and protocols. Captures slit lamp, anterior segment, external, adnexal, and orbital photography.
• Ensures patient comfort, safety, and proper positioning throughout imaging procedures.
• Recognizes and addresses image quality issues to ensure clinically useful diagnostic studies.
• Performs administrative tasks related to image proofing, indexing, documentation, and uploading diagnostic images into the patient's electronic medical record.
• Utilizes image editing and enhancement tools appropriately while maintaining image integrity and diagnostic accuracy.
• Manages digital image storage, file formats, security requirements, and image retention standards.
• Provides ophthalmic imaging services in the operating room as requested by physicians.
• Assists physicians and researchers with clinical and academic research projects by providing imaging expertise and technical support. Collaborates with providers to obtain, organize, and retrieve imaging data for patient care, education, and research purposes.
• Maintains imaging equipment in good operating condition through routine cleaning, troubleshooting, and coordination of maintenance services. Monitors imaging equipment performance and reports malfunctions or repair needs promptly.
• Orders imaging supplies, materials, and equipment accessories as needed to support departmental operations.
• Participates in quality improvement initiatives and maintains competency in emerging ophthalmic imaging technologies.
• Performs other duties and special assignments as required.

Education Qualifications

• Required - High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Preferred - Associates Degree
• Preferred - Technical Degree or Diploma

 

Experience Qualifications

• Required - Ophthalmic imaging 1-3 years (2 years)

 

Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of ocular anatomy, physiology, and common ophthalmic diseases.
• Knowledge of ophthalmic imaging equipment, techniques, and image management systems.
• Knowledge of electronic health records and medical imaging databases.
• Proficiency in digital image management, storage, and documentation.
• Familiarity with image editing software and image enhancement tools while maintaining diagnostic integrity.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to obtain and evaluate high-quality diagnostic images.
• Ability to work effectively with physicians, researchers, clinical staff, and patients.

 

Licenses and Certifications

• Preferred - Certified Retinal Angiographer Ophthalmic Photographers' Society
• Preferred - Certified Optical Coherence Tomographer Ophthalmic Photographers' Society

 

Supervision Provided by this Position

• There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position.

 

Physical Demands

• The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
• Must have good balance and coordination.
• The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
• The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
• Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
• Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
• Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
