Job Summary

The Underwriting Database Management Specialist supports the data needs of the Underwriting department. This role is responsible for extracting, importing, and linking data from various sources, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of underwriting tools, and developing reports to support rating and underwriting decisions. The specialist serves as a subject matter expert on underwriting tools, analyzing software needs, improving reporting capabilities, and driving process improvements.

What you’ll do

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for Underwriting and Group Rating data needs, developing reports and dashboards using Excel, Access, and visualization tools.
  • Develop and maintain underwriting databases, ensuring accurate data integration, governance, and reporting standards.
  • Construct VBA-based applications and process automation tools to improve underwriting workflow efficiency.
  • Collaborate with IT on system enhancements, upgrades, and development projects related to underwriting systems.
  • Ensure data integrity by auditing, cleaning, and validating datasets to maintain system performance and structural accuracy.
  • Develop and maintain custom rating and reporting formats for special underwriting requests.
  • Analyze underwriting data trends to provide insights and recommendations for business decisions.
  • Support internal training efforts, educating Underwriting and Group Rating teams on data tools, reporting best practices, and statistical methods.
  • Stay current on data, visualization, and analytics trends, applying new knowledge to provide advanced solutions.
  • Assist in governance processes, ensuring compliance with regulatory and corporate data standards.

What you need

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Information Management, Actuarial Science, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in data analytics, database management, or underwriting systems in the health insurance industry.
  • Experience with SQL, VBA, Tableau, Power BI, or similar reporting tools required.
  • Background in health insurance rating, actuarial modeling, or underwriting processes is a plus.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong data management and database administration skills (SQL, Access, Oracle, etc.).
  • Proficiency in Excel, VBA, and automation tools for underwriting applications.
  • Experience with data visualization and reporting tools (Tableau, Power BI, etc.).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to assess and enhance underwriting systems.
  • Ability to develop and implement data governance policies to maintain system integrity.
  • Effective communication skills to present findings and collaborate across teams.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to work independently and develop creative solutions for underwriting system improvements.

Compensation

$85,600 - $107,000

Exempt Grade 16

The compensation range for this role is a good faith estimate, it is estimated based on what a successful candidate might be paid.  All offers presented to candidates are carefully reviewed to ensure fair, equitable pay by offering competitive wages that align with the individual's skills, education, experience, and training.
