Position Overview
We are looking for a Device Robotic Automation Engineer responsible for designing, developing, integrating, and maintaining robotic automation solutions for Automated Fare Collection (AFC) devices. The role will combine robotic arm automation, test automation frameworks, device integration, and end-to-end validation to enable continuous and repeatable testing across devices such as Platform Validators (PV), Bus Validators (BV), Gates, TVMs, and other AFC equipment.
The engineer will work closely with V&V, Device Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Automation teams to build scalable automation solutions that simulate real-world passenger interactions and validate device behavior.
Roles & Responsibilities
1. Robotic Arm Automation
- Design, configure and maintain robotic-arm-based automation solutions for AFC devices.
- Develop robotic movements to simulate real passenger interactions, including:
- Tap/Present fare media
- Insert/remove cards where applicable
- Press physical buttons
- Interact with touchscreens/keypads
- Scan QR/barcodes
- Perform repeated tap and transaction scenarios
- Configure robotic arm coordinates, movement sequences, timing and positioning.
- Calibrate the robotic arm for different device types and physical configurations.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, positioning and communication issues with the robotic setup.
- Develop reusable robotic actions that can be applied across multiple device models.
2. Automation Framework Development
- Develop and maintain a scalable device automation framework for robotic and software-based testing.
- Integrate robotic-arm control with the automation framework and test execution engine.
- Create reusable libraries for device actions, fare media interactions, validations and recovery mechanisms.
- Implement parameterized and data-driven automation to support different:
- Operators
- Fare products
- Fare media
- Device configurations
- Transaction types
- Test environments
- Develop mechanisms for automated test setup, execution, validation and cleanup.
3. End-to-End AFC Device Validation
- Automate end-to-end scenarios covering the complete transaction flow from physical tap → device processing → back-office transaction → fare calculation → reporting/reconciliation, where applicable.
- Support testing across different fare media such as contactless cards, mobile wallets, smart cards and QR-based media.
- Validate device responses including:
- Audio
- LEDs
- Display messages
- Transaction results
- Device state
- Error conditions
- Automate positive, negative, boundary and exception scenarios.
4. Device Integration & Interface Automation
- Integrate automation with AFC device interfaces, simulators, APIs and test tools.
- Work with device logs and diagnostic information to identify failures.
- Automate device configuration and test data preparation where possible.
- Support integration with simulators, injectors and other test equipment.
- Develop automated mechanisms for device health checks and environment validation.
5. Continuous Testing
- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines to support regular device builds.
- Enable automated execution against weekly or scheduled device software builds.
- Develop smoke, sanity and regression suites for different device types.
- Support unattended/overnight execution using multiple automation bots.
- Monitor automated execution and investigate failures.
6. Defect Detection & Reporting
- Implement automated failure detection and evidence collection.
- Capture screenshots, device logs, transaction data, videos/images and execution results for failed tests.
- Integrate automation results with Jira or other defect management tools.
- Automatically create or update defects where appropriate.
- Perform initial failure analysis to distinguish between:
- Product defects
- Device/robot issues
- Environment issues
- Configuration issues
- Automation framework issues
7. Framework Scalability & Maintenance
