Does HackerEarth Detect Tab Switching and Copy-Paste?

Yes to both, with different consequences. As of September 9, 2026, HackerEarth documents that leaving the test window triggers a warning "each time" and, after a number of warnings the employer sets, logs the candidate out; the count of tab switches appears in the recruiter's report either way. Copy and paste can be disabled so that code from "the Web or a local computer" cannot be pasted into the editor. In Smart Browser, the desktop app, the keys themselves are disabled and a candidate who leaves the test screen has 10 seconds to return before removal.

Leaving the test window

HackerEarth's proctoring settings documentation describes the control as "Log Out on Leaving Test Environment": "The system gives the candidate a warning each time they move out of the test environment. The ideal number of warnings is 5." The candidate-facing version is blunter: "When you are in the test environment, you will not be allowed to move out of the test screen. Each time you move out, the system gives you a warning and subsequently logs you out" (Before you begin).

Moving out means the test page losing focus, which a switch to another tab, another window, or another application all cause. HackerEarth cannot read what is in the other tab; no web page can. Since March 2025, on Chrome and Edge only, HackerEarth also documents "Monitoring the entire candidate screen to prevent switching tabs", which means a screen share can show the other window rather than merely register the exit (release notes).

What the recruiter sees

The report "Displays the number of tab switches done by the candidate" (report components documentation). Tab switches are also one of the two main inputs to HackerEarth's integrity index, alongside webcam snapshot violations, which labels the session Acceptable, Marginally Acceptable, or Unacceptable. A notification that steals focus counts the same as a deliberate switch; the report holds a number, not a reason.

Being logged out is not the end of the test

Two HackerEarth FAQs matter here. One answers a candidate logged out by pressing the Windows key in Smart Browser: "You can log in again and take the test from the start", and restricted keys mean "you are logged out but the test does not end" (FAQ). The Smart Browser setup guide says that if you are logged out while the test window is still active, click the invitation link in your email to resume. HackerEarth does not publish whether the timer keeps running while you are out, so treat a logout as time lost and rejoin immediately.

Full-screen exits

A separate setting: "Candidates can take the test in full-screen mode when this is enabled. A warning is displayed if they exit full-screen mode during the test." In Smart Browser, full screen is not a setting but the environment; the app prevents "Resizing the test window" and exiting.

Copy and paste

When the employer disables it, "a candidate cannot copy the code (for example, from the Web or a local computer) and paste it into the code editor." A related setting prevents copying the problem statement out to other sites, which HackerEarth recommends recruiters "Keep enabled at all times". Smart Browser disables Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V outright and blocks "Copy-pasting code".

HackerEarth's report components page does not list a paste log or a copy-paste frequency field, unlike HackerRank's. What the recruiter does get is the keystroke replay for every programming question, which shows code arriving in one block if it was typed elsewhere and retyped. Smart Browser: the same rules, enforced by the app

HackerEarth's advanced proctoring documentation, updated January 22, 2026, says that "Any attempt by a candidate to move away from the test screen" triggers a warning and that a candidate who does not return within 10 seconds "will be automatically removed from the test". Alt+Tab, Ctrl+Alt+Delete, function keys, and the Windows and Command keys are disabled, and "Operating system notifications are blocked", so the accidental-notification case that produces spurious tab switches in a browser test does not arise.

What this means for candidates

Keep the test in the foreground for its whole duration. Before you start, silence notifications, close chat and email, and decide whether reference material is allowed by reading the instructions or asking the recruiter in writing.
