Does Mettl Record Your Screen?

Yes, in a proctored Mercer Mettl test. As of September 9, 2026, Mettl's candidate guide has you click "Start Screen Capture" and share your entire screen before the test opens, and its anti-cheating documentation says the platform "captures the candidate's screen & Camera feed snapshots at every 60 seconds." A live proctor can watch the test screen in real time, and record-and-review keeps the feed for later. A non-proctored Mettl test captures nothing from your display.

How the screen share is set up

Mettl's proctored assessment guide describes the step: "Click 'Start Screen Capture' button," then select the entire screen and click Share. Firefox shows its own prompt, quoted in Mettl's technical issues page: "Will you allow tests.mettl.com to see your screen." A browser cannot capture your display without that prompt, so its absence means no screen capture for that test.

The share is the whole display. Anything on it during the test, including notification pop-ups, a second browser window, or a chat client, is in scope.

What Mettl does with the feed

Three documented uses, and an employer can enable any combination.

Periodic screenshots. Mettl's Start Assessing Better guide describes a setting called "Capture Candidate Screen" that "enables capturing periodic screenshots of the test-taker's screen while attempting the test." The anti-cheating measures page gives the interval: screen and camera snapshots "at every 60 seconds."

Live view. Mettl's Proctoring Guide says a proctor who opens your tile sees the live feed including your test screen, and can play the recording back afterward.

Full recording. For record-and-review, the remote proctoring overview says administrators "have the access to entire video recording of duration where the candidate is attempting the test." Mettl's proctoring FAQ describes that mode as one where "audio-visual and screen-sharing feeds are recorded throughout the test and reviewed later."

Inside the lockdown browser the capture is the same, but the browser also controls what else can be on screen. Mettl's Windows MSB documentation says it "shuts down all active applications and browsers" and "does not allow sharing/mirroring of computer screens on any other display device." On macOS the app needs the Screen Recording permission, which Mettl documents in a dedicated permission guide.

A second display is a separate problem. Mettl's technical issues page says a multiple-screens error appears "when you have multiple screens connected while starting/attempting the assessment," including a screen cast over Chromecast or Firestick. Disconnect it before you start.

Screen capture on the mobile app

If the employer allows the Mettl mobile app, the phone's screen is captured too. The iOS setup guide has you "Tap on 'Start Screen Capture' button to start capturing the device screen," and warns that a "Proctoring enabled assessment will consume more battery."

What the screen capture cannot see

A screen share shows pixels, not processes. Mettl's browser-based capture cannot list the applications running on your machine or read a second device; what a page can and cannot learn about other software is covered in whether interview websites can see running apps. What it can see is everything drawn on the display, on a fixed clock, and reviewed either by a model, a person later, or a proctor now. What this means for candidates

If the setup screen asks for screen capture, close personal documents, messaging apps, and password managers first, and disconnect any second display.
